When its first season aired, the AppleTV+ series Ted Lasso (2020–present) not only established Apple as a main player in the streaming war during an era of intense competition from other streaming platforms (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+) but immediately became an escapist televisual phenomenon during an unprecedented period in recent history: the last year of Donald Trump’s first term in office (2016–2020) and the global coronavirus pandemic. At a time of great instability, collective trauma, and deep division, Ted Lasso offered the world positive respite embodied in Ted’s unifying personal and professional mantra: believe. Over the course of its three season run, Ted Lasso faced mixed critical reception, with many critics taking aim at the series’ character and narrative arcs. Focussing on the criticism levelled at the series, this chapter contextualises its reception within wider discourses about toxic masculinity, which the series openly assaults.
