Empathising with the People’s Princess: Diana and Public Engagement with The Crown and Its Past
摘要
This chapter examines public responses to the depiction of Princess Diana in the fourth series of The Crown (2016–2023) and reconsiders how the show draws on existing commemorative cultures which are heavily charged with emotional investments and empathetic meanings. The study emphasises the potential for television producers to act as arbiters of past and present, deliberately evoking empathy to engage a range of potential consumers. By viewing public social media response as an intrinsic component of contemporary television experience and examining some of these responses through network analysis frameworks, this study re-emphasises the persuasive power of television consumption within the contexts of an evolving, on-demand, global digital ecosystem and unfolding media narratives about the contemporary British monarchy.
