Contrary to the motivations of most of the chapters in this book, which consider the ways in which select television series elicit empathy, the following chapter examines television series that provoke the opposite. Exploring the ways in which Dutch reality television focusing on neighbourly disputes challenges ordinary, cringeworthy, and banal everyday situations and behaviours, the author observes that such television series can provoke contra-empathy. As the chapter argues, neighbour dispute programmes in Dutch television raise important questions about empathetic engagement as viewers are more likely to laugh at than to empathise with the shows’ participants, which the chapter posits as a transgression that is culturally defined.
