Empathy and the Miniseries Format: The Case of the Opioid Epidemic Drama Dopesick
摘要
Considering the Hulu miniseries/scripted docuseries Dopesick (2018), the following chapter explores in what ways these television genres and formats are uniquely equipped to explore major societal issues, in this case the opioid crisis in America, with depth and empathy. In the chapter the author demonstrates that in the case of Dopesick, the combination of genres such as family and medical drama and the format of the miniseries generate an empathetic reading of the opioid crisis which contributes to the de-stigmatisation of addiction.
