The following chapter analyses the Australian crime series Mystery Road (ABC, 2018–present) through the prism of genre and history, and interrogates how the show’s Australian setting, longform serial storytelling, and generic conventions drawn from the western cultivate one’s capacity for empathy. This chapter highlights the ways in which the show problematises the process of empathy and invites us to reflect on how our history, culture, and community affect how we empathise with one another.
