A rich soil is essential for the ecosystem that supports a wide range of life forms including plants, animals and humans. Soil erosion influences the loss in soil fertility and productivity of the land. Soil erosion caused by natural agents like water and wind has been accelerated due to anthroposenic activity which not merely affects the environment but also intensifies food security both globally and locally. Therefore, it is important to make a regular valuation of soil loss dynamics and explore its contributing factors. This paper intended to investigate the spatio-temporal soil loss dynamics of the Subarnarekha watershed, India. Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) integrating R, K, LS, C and P-factor maps derived from various Google Earth Engine (GEE) datasets have been used to evaluate soil erosion of the Subarnarekha basin. Both seasonal and annual dynamics of soil loss are understood by using the GEE platform. The annual average soil loss is estimated as 31.97 ton/hac/year considering the last 8 years result (2016–2023). Soil loss was relatively low in 2018, 2019 and 2020. The seasonal dynamics of soil loss for the river basin show a maximum soil loss during the monsoon period (July, August and September). The seasonal patterns of soil loss across the basin and the associated classification system provide a foundation for localized planning and effective implementation of soil conservation strategies for the river basin.

摘要
