This chapter will review research documenting dysregulated subjective affect and physiological arousal in individuals with insomnia and depression. It will also introduce different types of stress systems (e.g., hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis) and affect regulation strategies (e.g., suppression, acceptance, cognitive reappraisal) and discuss a potential pathway from insomnia to depression via maladaptive stress and affect regulation strategies. Implications for the assessment and treatment of individuals with insomnia and depressive disorders will be discussed and will be supplemented with a clinical case study.
