Purpose—This study aims to explore—from the perspectives of employees of an oil and gas organization in the Sultanate of Oman—the extent to which the integration of management theories (Contingency, Strategic Management, Change Management, and Total Quality Management Theories) with emerging technologies (AI, IoT and Blockchain) improves the operational efficiencies in alignment with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs) are perceived, the study reports on the analysis between the management theories and emerging technology adoption. The study is based on the assumption that the implementation of management theories with emerging technologies increases operational efficiency. A pragmatic philosophy underpins the study’s research design. A qualitative case study approach involving interviewing eight (8) employees at the case organization was used for data collection. The survey includes twelve open-ended questions highlighting viable quotes that validate quantitative results. Thematic analysis is used to identify the frequency occurrence of words and phrases that reflect management theories, technological alignment, and operational efficiencies in alignment with the SDGs. The findings suggest that the integration of management theories with emerging technologies improves operational efficiency and aligns operations with SDGs. The results also reveal the importance of leadership in driving technological adoption, regulatory pressure, and organizational culture in addition to the key factors affecting the adoption of emerging technologies. The findings suggest that implementing management theories with emerging technologies improves operational efficiency in alignment with the SDGs. Significantly, although the sample is taken from one case study in a limited geographical area in Oman, which may jeopardize the generalizability of the findings, the study opens a new horizon of research in this area to validate the results in similar locations. The study provides insights, via the qualitative findings of participants’ voice, into the critical role of leadership and management theories integrating the new technologies in the oil and gas industry. It spotlights the challenge of alignment management theories with advanced technologies under regulatory and cultural constraints. The insights gained from this study are useful to the oil and gas industries. It provides them with an understanding of the value of integrating management theories with emerging technologies to improve operational efficiency in alignment with SDGs.
