Technological Innovations in Renewable Energy

This chapter discusses renewable energy technologies as having the ability solve energy shortages for disadvantaged groups and places. The chapter assesses what renewable energy technologies and energy solutions are most promising based on such advances, which are known to improve rural low-resource communities’ socioeconomic status. As solar energy technology advances, portable solar panels, solar micro-grids, and pay-as-you-go solar systems might power towns off the grid. Affordable and accessible electricity in rural areas increases school and hospital hours and vocational and agricultural activity. Wind energy from small and medium-sized turbines may also benefit low-income communities. Wind turbine parts must be made locally for local wind velocity, therefore skills transfer workshops must promote low-income manufacturing to ensure sustainability. Small hydropower projects are low-impact and low-cost; as well as low-head turbines are modular and portable, so they do not disrupt ecosystems or livelihoods. Communities that use solar, wind, and battery farms because enlarged central networks are too expensive, yet need dependable electricity, more strongly support off-grid hybrid solutions. Relative case studies and real successes in solar system in sub-Saharan Africa, wind in South Asia, small-scale hydropower in South America—suggest that regionally ingenious solutions to regionally complicated problems come with relative technological advances. Thus, renewable energy technology will always be the most effective tool for sustainable, fair development with solid finance, technical advances, and international aid.
