Sustainable Agriculture and Land Use for Emission Reduction

Agriculture and land use are key sectors for the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fighting climate change globally. It highlights the importance of ensuring that landscape management to mitigate emissions through more sustainable practices includes increased carbon storage, or capturing more carbon in the earth, improved soil quality, and improved resource efficiency. The chapter demonstrates through case studies and discussed strategies, such as crop rotation, agroforestry, and conservation tillage, how these practices can both mitigate emissions and promote food security and resilience in agricultural systems. Additionally, it discusses how to support this transition both through innovative technological solutions and policy frameworks and also includes cases of successful adaptation of these principles in different environments. The goal of this chapter is to provide an overview that allows for the understanding of how sustainable agriculture and land use may facilitate achieving net emission reduction targets, while remaining consistent with our long-term food systems.
