The circular economy focuses on reducing waste, improving resource efficiency, and designing systems that restore natural ecosystems. The circular economy replaces the traditional linear take-make-dispose model with one that emphasizes the need to recycle, reuse, and remanufacture to support sustainable growth. At the core of this framework is innovations in waste management. However, advanced recycling technologies and upcycling systems allow the same material to be effectively turned back into available resources, thus reducing landscape waste and reliance on precious virgin raw materials. Improvements in the efficiency of recycling processes, for instance, stemming from AI-base sorting technologies and bio-based treatments, will allow greater flexibility in recycling systems that can respond to different waste streams. Cleaner production is one of the most important methods that can be implemented to minimize environmental effects. Other concepts, such as closed-loop systems and industrial symbiosis, allow manufacturers to recycle by-products, reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions. This chapter references circular economy initiatives via the manufacturing sector and the potential this has for resilient supply chains.
