Anti-imperialism and non-alignment emerged from the matrix of colonial domination. Both were foundational principles of the so-called Third World (now relabelled as the global south), helping post-colonial states to navigate their way through the pressures brought to bear upon them by the conflicting blocs during the Cold War. But is non-alignment still relevant in a world in which enormous divisions in wealth and power have emerged within the global south itself; and in which new forms of domination are fast emerging within a more multipolar order? The wars in Ukraine and Gaza have not only had adverse developmental impacts, especially on the poorer countries in the global south. They have also reinforced unhelpful and divisive struggles between NATO, Russia, and China for influence. Yet active non-alignment still has appeal: as a principled approach to international relations; as a way of ensuring a voice for the global south in global issues like climate change and sustainable development; and as a practical approach to mediating the conflicts now tearing the world apart.
