Affirmative Action (AA) seeks to reverse the discrimination against certain groups of individuals. In India, affirmative Action includes increasing employment opportunities for scheduled castes and tribes. In India, CSR activities towards AA have been only to the tune of 8%. Tata Affirmative Action Programme (TAAP) started in April 2007, focuses on reducing the prevailing social discrimination of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes (SC/ST). Tata Metaliks, a division of Tata Steel, has developed a Livelihood and Skill Development Center of Excellence for the communities around its factory, where the AA population is around 54%. This case study provides a structured approach to planning skill development programmes as part of Affirmative Action.
