Women as Leaders of Social Movements: Opportunities, Claims and Outcomes of the Masaktach Movement
摘要
The main focus of this study is on the issue of women’s struggle against social inequalities and injustices in Morocco, from an NGO perspective. The choice of the Masaktach (I won’t be silent, in Arabic/the Moroccan version of the Me-Too movement) movement is to highlight the agency of women as leaders of a social movement in their attempt to protect women against harassment and sexual violence (VAW hereafter). An examination of women’s struggle for more gender equality in Morocco allows a broader discussion of the themes of social activism and the possibility of achieving social change in a society torn between modernity and tradition. The woman question has haunted the imaginary of Moroccan society and has always been the source of conflict between liberal and traditionalist movements.
