Temperature rise is a significant aspect of climate change primarily due to anthropogenic activities. At the same time, rising temperatures contribute to broader shifts associated with climate change. This phenomenon poses major environmental, health, and socio-economic challenges, especially in the context of rapid urban growth. African cities, in particular, are at the forefront, confronting substantial temperature increases and their negative effects. Consequently, this paper aims to (1) illustrate the changes in air temperatures across African countries over the past five decades (1973–2023) and (2) advocate for the use of nature-based solutions (NBS) to mitigate urban temperatures. This would be done initially by protecting and restoring ecosystems, and subsequently fostering the creation of new ones. The findings suggest that climate change in Africa encompasses both warming and cooling trends. Furthermore, NBS can serve as effective instruments for addressing temperature-related hazards and enhancing climate resilience in Africa.
