Analyzes the value of Blackening OthelloShakespeare, William within a changing American paradigm from slavery to abolition: which for European Americans elided differences of nation in favor of a unified whitenesswhiteness and for Blacks transitioned them from slave to freedman. His becoming Black, I argue, is not coincidental, but the alignment chronologically with the abolition movement in America participates in the creation of American whiteness. This chapter positions the Blackening of OthelloShakespeare, William as a character within a larger antiblack political project of making racism an individual issue and distracting from its structural implications.
