This chapter provides an overview of the economic aspects of animal genetic resources (AnGRs) and an economic framework for the sustainable use and conservation of AnGRs in Africa. It begins with a look at the role of economics in the sustainable use and conservation of AnGRs. The methods and tools used to quantify the economic value of AnGRs are discussed both from a theoretical and practical points of view. Drawing from literature and examples of experiences from practical applications, this chapter presents decision-making information on the economic and social benefits and costs of AnGRs conservation. The chapter concludes by discussing the framework that theoretically underpins not only the economic valuation of AnGRs but also other economic aspects of AnGRs’ use and conservation.
