As the interest in question generation from texts grew in the first decade of the century, there was a parallel strong interest in AQG systems that utilize formal methods of knowledge representation, i.e. knowledge bases and ontologies. The research on AQG from knowledge bases focused on issues like: how can questions be generated from knowledge bases and ontologies; how multiple-choice items can be generated and what properties can be supported for them.
