This chapter begins by defining teacher and middle leadership and describing five areas in which trustworthy claims can be made about the roles: impact, interventions, leadership focus, identification and support. This is followed by a review of research about leadership preparation and development from a broad perspective and through a focus on one jurisdiction, Australia. For the Australian case, career pathways, professional learning, school culture and structure, senior leadership support, role definition and self-development are explored. The paper concludes by considering future leadership preparation and support through four future scenarios.
