The Circadian Rhythm

Our body follows a natural 24-hour cycle, known as the circadian rhythm, which regulates when we feel sleepy or alert, influences hormone production, and even affects how efficiently we metabolize food. This internal clock is located in a small region of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN; the brain’s master timekeeper), and relies primarily on light to stay synchronized with the environment. Every cell in our body contains molecular timekeepers, driven bt proteins like CLOCK and BMAL1, all working together and synchronized by the master timekeeper in the brain. People naturally fall into different sleep patterns, called chronotypes—some are early birds, others night owls. However, modern life challenges these natural rhythms through artificial light, late-night screen time, shift work, and jet lag. When our internal clock gets disrupted, it can affect our sleep, health, and daily cognitive and motor performance.
