The World of Sleep Disorders
摘要
Sleep disorders represent a major modern health challenge, affecting approximately 70 million adults in the United States alone. With over 80 distinct conditions ranging from common insomnia to relatively rare disorders like REM sleep behavior disorder, these disruptions impact both physical and mental well-being. Poor sleep creates fatigue comparable to alcohol intoxication, while chronic sleep disorders increase risks of serious health problems including heart disease, diabetes, and depression. The workplace and public safety implications prove particularly concerning, with drowsy driving causing thousands of accidents yearly and fatigue-related workplace incidents costing up to $400 billion annually. While these disorders pose serious challenges, modern sleep medicine offers effective treatments through behavioral techniques, medical devices, and medication when properly and timely diagnosed.
