Frequency Synthesizer of X Band

The paper introduces approaches to the development and implementation of an X-band frequency synthesizer, which is built on the basis of available components and is characterized by a small frequency change step and a satisfactory level of phase noise. The paper briefly deals with the features of various analog and digital phase-locked loop (PLL) devices, including those based on dielectric resonators. Main advantages and drawbacks of the digital signal synthesis (DSS) oscillators are considered. The functional diagram of the developed frequency synthesizer includes two PLLs and DDS circuit. The first PLL is DR series specifically for PLL use (PLDRO) with 8 GHz output oscillations and −132.85 dBc/Hz phase noise at 1 kHz offset, 1 kHz bandwidth and 10 MHz tuning band. The low noise output oscillations of Direct Digital Synthesis are in the lower band, but their bandwidth is 100 MHz and step is 400 Hz. In the second PLL the frequency convertor substitutes the high-N frequency divider. The synthesizer oscillation frequency varies in the range of 1...1.5 GHz with a step of 1 kHz. The phase noise is −98.32 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset. The paper also deals with frequency and standing wave ratio by voltage (VSWR) responses of used low pass and pass band filters.
