Airplane position measurements by data from the network of navigation aids have been highly useful during recent years due to a wide jamming of global positioning system in the eastern side of Europe. Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) is one of the reliable sensors that could be used for civil airplane position measurements. Requirements of area navigation RNAV 1 could be guaranteed by the DME/DME positioning algorithm in case of long interruption of a primary positioning system. In this paper, an area analysis approach is proposed for DME network configuration estimation. Configuration of the Ukrainian ground network is studied in three scenarios: initial, reduced functionality, and suspended to analyze network performance in correspondence with RNAV 1 requirements. Area analysis is performed by parameters of the number of ground beacons and DME/DME pairs available to use, mean standard deviation error of positioning by effective pair, and estimation area in which requirements of area navigation specification are guaranteed. Results of the study show that the area of RNAV 1 in Ukrainian airspace is reduced from 95.3% in the initial scenario to 87.7% in the reduced functionality scenario, and reaches 79.8% in a suspended scenario.

摘要
