Urban shrinkage is an issue affecting cities, characterized by substantial population decrease, rapid economic downturn, increased unoccupied land, underutilized infrastructure, and less social activity. This dilemma is propelled by profound changes in the determinants of urban growth. From 2018 to 2050, the urban population growth of India, China, and Nigeria will account for 35% of the global urban population rise. The UN-Habitat report indicates that India and China comprise 20% & 60% of the shrinkage in developing nations by 2050. This research compares the population data with spatio-temporal data and Night-Time Light data to determine which cities in India are shrinking. The spatio-temporal data is utilized to analyze geographical transformations within a defined region while Night-time light imagery is employed to analyze urbanization, population density, and economic activity. These two data sets provide a rapid and impartial means to assess human activities and habitation. These findings enhance our understanding of the phenomenon of urban shrinking in India. India is apprehensive over the fast and unchecked urbanization, with the progressive decline of metropolitan areas. Recognizing declining urban regions and understanding their spatio-temporal trends is essential for developing effective policies and implementing innovative solutions to tackle this issue.
