This chapter explores the relationship between performance space and the ghost story. In literalising the haunted house as place, the theatre enables a tangible space for representations of supernatural Otherness which itself might be exploited as part of the apparatus of unease. As well as exploring more pragmatic aspects of the relationship between space and geographical place in the ghost story, the chapter considers how the ghost story on stage navigates questions of class, gender, and race that are tied to spaces and the ways in which they are employed to foreground sensations of belonging and exclusion.
