This last chapter leaves the realms of description and analysis to speculate about the possible trajectories of the two fields in the social sciences that concern themselves with futures thinking, that is, futures studies and the sociology of the future. Based on the empirical studies, it is argued that recent developments in how the sciences are organized—first and foremost characterized by a continued erosion of disciplines—pose a more severe risk to the sociology of the future than to futures studies, as the first shows more characteristics of a discipline than the latter. Yet, ideally, instead of ignoring each other or, worse, ridiculing each other’s knowledge claims, an arrangement between the two might be realized that allows for a diligent division of labor. Together, the two fields could achieve a more balanced form of futures thinking that provides answers to urgent societal needs while maintaining the stability of an academic discipline.
