This chapter introduces the theoretical framework and the research design of the scientometric studies of futures studies and the sociology of the future. The central concept of the theoretical framework is the knowledge collective, which over given periods of time entertains different attention spaces. Two options to map such attention spaces are discussed: first, researchers can focus on which references are used to support the claims made in publications. As this concerns the tracing of lineages of ideas, the term epistemic tribe is proposed to address the clusters found in this attention space. Second, researchers can focus on the topics that are predominantly discussed within an attention space. This dimension is explored as the territories claimed by the members of the knowledge collective under scrutiny. In concluding, the chapter describes the data retrieval procedures used and justifies the use of Elsevier’s Scopus database.
