This chapter focuses mainly on the historical evolution of the Police Force in the period of political and economic uncertainty in Ghana, from 1966 to 1981. All the six (6) successful coup d’états or military interventions and countless unsuccessful ones took place over this period. The country’s worst economic crises, including shortages of food, medicines and other essential commodities, were experienced over this period. This period was the most severe in terms of political and economic depression. It proved to be as restless as the years preceding independence, and the Police, the most visible instrument of the State’s monopoly of force, was once again called in aid to brutally maintain calm.
