This chapter discusses the Police Force in the post-independence era, from 1957 to 1966. The new political administration under the leadership of President Nkrumah faced two key governance challenges: first, the need to consolidate the hard-won political and economic freedom of the country and to build the necessary infrastructure for economic and political development; and second, the challenge of establishing social institutions that would foster the integration of diverse ethnic and clan groups into the process of nation building and development. Ironically, the new administration turned to the Police Force as a ready and willing tool for servicing the twin agenda. Having been formed for the sole purpose of enforcing the laws and the political economy of colonialism, it was easy to use the Police Force in service of the twin agenda of the new administration.
