Pastures are the groundwork of animal production and play an important role in the sustainability of integrated agricultural production systems. However, inadequate nutrition compromises the production and nutritional value of forage plants in many regions. In this chapter, we elucidate the importance of adequate nutrition in the morphogenic processes of growth and tillering and its direct influence on biomass production and nutritional value of forage grasses. Although research on the role of some nutrients in the growth of forage crops is scarce, studies on nitrogen and phosphate fertilization have advanced. They show that maintenance fertilization in pastures (in the rainy season or throughout the year when fertigation is available) is necessary for an optimal forage production, thus achieving a more efficient animal production. Furthermore, new alternatives are promising, such as the use of elements beneficial to plants, especially silicon (Si). Silicon supply allows mitigating the losses by nutrient deficiencies or toxicities in forage plants, improving the efficiency of nutrient use, and optimizing the production of plants under nutritional stress or not, which may further boost animal production on pastures.
