Although silicon is not considered a plant nutrient, recent studies indicate that silicon fertilization improves the nutritional quality of forage plants and enhances nitrogen fertilizer utilization. Consequently, there is an increase in crude protein levels, carbohydrate production, and, therefore, higher forage dry matter yield. These factors contribute to forage palatability and digestibility, making it more attractive for animal consumption. Therefore, in this chapter, we aim to highlight the effects of silicon on the nutritional status, nutritional quality, and productivity of forage plants.
