This chapter seeks to deconstruct and challenge current conceptualisations of radicalisation by examining the processes of radicalisation of sectarian identities in Pakistan through a political, legal, and historical lens. While the mainstream understanding of radicalism is limited to manifestations of extremist religious ideologies, research demonstrates that politics of power and exclusion, among other factors, play a more significant role than that attributed to religious ideologies in the radicalisation process. This chapter analyses and demonstrates how and to what extent laws and various iterations of the Constitution of Pakistan predicated on a Sunni Muslim identity have contributed to and even sanctioned the radicalisation of sectarian identities via attempts at state-building and institutionalisation of certain religio-political movements and identities to gain political traction.
