Agricultural water management systems are critical to achieving food production sustainability. Although a number of agricultural water management practices are in operation since long; these practices may not be able to meet the current challenges of water scarcity under the era of climate change. Here comes the role of innovative approaches in modern agriculture. However, these innovations carry inherent risks that must be identified and mitigated in order for them to be implemented successfully. This abstract delves into major innovations such as drip irrigation, precision irrigation, sprinkler and furrow irrigation systems, water distribution networks, conservation agriculture, desalination, and mulching. The risks of each innovation are identified, such as technological malfunctions, financial constraints, environmental impacts, and social disparities. Furthermore, potential solutions are proposed, such as regular maintenance and calibration, the use of renewable energy sources, farmer education and training, equitable policy frameworks, and stakeholder involvement. Addressing these risks through comprehensive strategies is critical to realizing the full potential of agricultural water management innovations and ensuring the long-term viability of water resources in agriculture.
