Multi-omics Approaches in the Detection of Biofilms and Biofilm-Associated Infections

Since the emergence of omics technologies, the knowledge about microbial system has been substantially improved. Microbial switching from planktonic to biofilm forms offers survival adaptability, such as antimicrobial resistance, host immune evasion, resistance to biocides and other environmental conditions, and makes them resistant to treatment strategies. Therefore, the mechanism monitoring such conditions and identification of biomarkers for the biofilm identification are necessary for ease detection. Omics approaches in biofilm studies remain less explored, and the mechanism behind biofilm formation can be identified using multi-omics tools. Through this method, the detection of genes, proteins, and metabolites contained in the biofilm development and also the pathways or networks associated with the conversion of planktonic forms into biofilms can be possible. In this chapter, we provided an overall idea about different omics methods and the techniques widely employed in exploring biofilm and associated phenotypes.
