Polysaccharides Based Gums and Mucilage: As Potential Biomaterial

To interact with biological systems for a medical purpose either therapeutic or diagnostic-engineered biomaterials are used biological organisms like plants, fungi, animals, bacteria, and other life forms a material are derived or produced. Biomaterials are used for the following broad range of applications: medical implants, methods to promote the human tissues, including clips, sutures, and staples for wound recovery, and dissolvable dressings, human tissue regeneration, using a combination of biomaterial supports or scaffolds, cells, and bioactive molecules, biosensors to find out the amount and presence of specific substances and to convey that data and drug-delivery excipient that carry and/or apply drugs to a disease target. Excipients play a basic role in the formulation of medicines, which ensures the dosage, stability, and bioavailability of the active principle constituted by its excipients. The global pharmaceutical excipients market is projected to a CAGR of 5.8%; of which synthetic excipients contribute a major portion. Considering the limitations of synthetic excipients, the industry is in demand of natural excipients for pharmaceuticals, medicinal, food, and cosmeceuticals. In the present chapter a comprehensive overview of gum and mucilage as potential biomaterials for drug delivery applications is discussed.
