The increasing integration of digital technologies into public sector operations has generated a growing body of academic research. To better understand the dynamics of this emerging field, we conducted a bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer, employing both science mapping and performance analysis to explore the intersection of “digital transformation” and the “public sector”. Utilising the Web of Science database, we identified 225 articles published on this topic. The analysis highlighted significant contributions from countries such as China, England, Germany, Sweden, the USA, and Italy, reflecting a global interest in exploring the impact of digital innovations on public sector performance. Key themes that emerged from the co-occurrence of keywords include digital transformation, innovation, e-government, public sector, management, governance, and technology. These keywords indicate the major areas of focus within the existing literature, with “digital transformation” and “innovation” being the most frequent, suggesting a strong interest in how public institutions adapt to and leverage digital tools. The study also mapped citation networks, revealing influential papers and authors, which serve as a foundation for further research in the field. This analysis provides valuable insights into the current state of research on public sector digitalisation, identifying both well-explored topics and under-researched areas. The findings highlight the pivotal role digital transformation plays in enhancing efficiency, transparency, and the delivery of public services. Furthermore, digitalisation improves decision-making processes by streamlining data management and increasing accessibility to real-time information. It also fosters greater citizen engagement and participation through digital platforms, enabling more inclusive and responsive governance. These channels collectively contribute to the modernisation of public sector operations, paving the way for more effective and accountable institutions in the digital age.
