The Indian American community in the US is not a new one. It has colonial roots. This chapter traces the evolution of this community, engaging with debates about their arrival in the US. It analyses the demographic transitions that this community underwent from the period of unregulated to that of regulated migration. It also investigates the stereotypes that arose around this community and how it battled against them by organizing itself. The chapter also explores its political participation in Indian politics through continuous contributions to the freedom struggle. During this period, however, Indian Americans were unable to exercise soft power due to the dominant imperial order at the time. This chapter identifies the linkages between the international, domestic, and local spheres, considering how they influence each other, and how they impact the phenomenon of diasporic soft power.
