This chapter begins by exploring the varied sources of soft power that states possess and have traditionally used to exercise  inlfuence. In this process, it explores sources such as cinema, education, and media. It examines the nuances of functioning of these sources—which states use them, how they operate, and how their effectiveness can be analyzed. The instinctive question was “What made states think of diaspora communities as a source of soft power?,” especially when there are so many other sources available. The chapter explores the universality of this phenomenon. It attempts to understand which states can use their diaspora communities as sources of soft power, and why, scrutinizing the various factors that make this phenomenon possible. Lastly, the chapter specifically draws examples from diaspora communities in the US.
