Transforming Digital Inclusion in Africa Through Innovative Business Models: A Multiple-case Study Approach
摘要
This chapter examines how digital business models are leveraged to promote digital and financial inclusion across diverse African contexts. Through a multiple-case study approach analyzing twelve innovative companies, the chapter uncovers complex patterns of innovation, adaptation, and impact. The findings reveal that successful digital businesses in Africa not only adapt to local conditions but actively shape their operational contexts. Mobile technology serves as a crucial foundation for innovation, fostering the development of new financial products that address specific needs, including energy access and healthcare. The chapter highlights the importance of regulatory engagement, ecosystem cultivation, and deep local knowledge in scaling digital services. The chapter observes a spectrum of financial inclusion, challenging binary notions of “banked” versus “unbanked” populations. The chapter contributes to theories of digital business models and digital inclusion by proposing a more dynamic, context-embedded understanding of how these models evolve in emerging markets. The findings indicate that for digital innovation to thrive in Africa, it must be rooted not only in advanced technology but also in strong institutional frameworks and a keen awareness of social dynamics. This chapter provides valuable insights for entrepreneurs, policymakers, and investors seeking to harness digital innovation for financial inclusion and economic development in Africa.
