Sustaining Digital Business Models in Africa: A Mixed-Method Study of Video Streaming Platforms
摘要
This chapter investigates the sustainability factors of digital business models in emerging markets, with a particular focus on video streaming services (VSS) in Africa. Using a mixed-method approach that combines digital ethnography and executive interviews, we explore how various organizations navigate the challenges of building sustainable digital platforms within a rapidly evolving and diverse market environment. Our findings reveal that successful VSS providers in Africa employ dynamic, context-specific strategies that challenge traditional assumptions regarding the scalability of digital business models and the resource-based competitive advantage. We introduce the concepts of “Dynamic Contextual Resources” and “Polymorphic Business Models” to illustrate how firms can achieve a sustainable competitive advantage in diverse digital emerging markets. This study contributes to the literature on digital business models by providing empirical evidence from an understudied context, extending resource-based view theory to digital platforms in emerging markets, and offering a nuanced understanding of business model innovation in heterogeneous environments. The findings have significant implications for managers and policymakers seeking to cultivate sustainable digital ecosystems in emerging economies, underscoring the need for adaptive strategies, long-term investment, and a deep understanding of local markets.
