This introductory chapter sets the foundation for exploring Africa’s digital business transformation through the lens of business model innovation. Beyond the common narrative of potential and leapfrogging, the chapter frames the continent's digital evolution as an active, present reality where entrepreneurs are creating uniquely African solutions to longstanding challenges. The chapter establishes the book’s theoretical groundwork by introducing frameworks specifically designed for African contexts—the Contextual Business Model Innovation (CBMI) framework and the ADAPT model—which will guide analyses throughout subsequent chapters. It previews the volume’s journey across various sectors, from fintech and healthcare to agriculture and education, where digital innovation is blurring traditional boundaries and creating new value ecosystems. The chapter highlights distinctive patterns emerging across the continent: mobile-first thinking, frugal innovation under resource constraints, novel approaches to building digital trust, cultural adaptation, inclusive design, and ecosystem development. While acknowledging infrastructural and regulatory challenges, we position Africa’s digital transformation as a source of insights relevant far beyond its borders. This volume invites scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and investors to engage not just as observers but as potential participants in shaping Africa’s digital future—a future that offers valuable lessons for global markets navigating rapid technological change.

摘要
