Physicians have a social obligation to heal, discover, and teach. Our educational mission extends beyond our role in professional endeavors and mandates that we inform the public about health-related matters. A major vehicle for this is through our interactions with media. As physicians, we may be contacted by journalists to discuss medical problems and treatment, new research findings, health-related matters in the news, or positions on health policy. Few of us have been trained to talk with the media. To effectively engage with the media, we need to understand the motivation and function of journalists, the various types of media in which we may choose to engage, and appreciate that to be effective, ethical, and professional may require new skills and practice. While there are many potential pitfalls in this endeavor, media presents us with an ability to reach a very broad audience and provide education that may further public health.
