How to Implement Best Practices in Faculty Searches for Equity
摘要
Recruiting, selecting, and maintaining a diverse faculty in academic medicine is needed to pursue the most complex problems that affect all of us. This is not a matter of political correctness, but one of intellectual excellence. Collectively, across diverse genders, abilities, cultures, races, sexual orientations and identities, ages, and disciplines our knowledge is deepened and widened, thereby creating opportunities for scientific discovery that would otherwise not be possible. To achieve this and be sustainable, academic institutions must adopt inclusive practices that are undergirded by policies and systems that maintain the rigor of academic excellence and ensure the endurance of diverse faculty over time. Too often programs or committees are mistaken for administrative practice, and while there is overlap, it is critical for institutional leadership to implement systems and practices that support diverse faculty. Broadening the scope of diversity in academic medicine advances human health globally. Therefore, the aim of this chapter is to provide best practices for faculty searches to increase diverse representation among the faculty across the ranks as well as provide tips for strategically engaging search committees and managing unconscious biases in the selection process.
