How to Sustain a Meaningful and Purpose-Driven Career in Academic Medicine
摘要
Each physician is a human being with unique interests, talents, aspirations, and personal responsibilities. Building a meaningful and purpose-driven career as a faculty member requires that faculty determine what matters most to them both personally and professionally, consider what steps and actions will help foster professional development in the domains identified, and navigate the ever-evolving landscape of medicine and forces in the work environment that may derail efforts to pursue those domains. These actions empower physicians to shape their careers to focus on the intrinsic motivators that are most aligned with their individual needs, rather than following a uniform approach to professional development. With intentionality, physicians can advance their careers in ways that align with their personal and professional values and needs. Regular reflection is also necessary to recognize evolving interests and priorities as these needs change over time. In this chapter, we will consider how physicians can identify and integrate personal values, consider what is most meaningful to them in their work, take action to shape their careers, and avoid challenges that can derail these efforts.
