Prospect of Rubber (Hevea brassilensis) Commercialization in Nepal

Hevea brasiliensis is a high-value para or Brazilian rubber tree species with both ecological and economic benefits. The rubber plantation enterprise contributes to the sustainable development of rural communities and small-holder farmers while aiding in conservation of the environment. More than 50,000 types of economic products can be made from this rubber species. In addition, 400 rubber products are known to have pharmaceutical uses. In today’s competitive economies, the value of natural rubber is maximized through the production of automobile tyres, toys, and many other specialty items for value addition. From the standpoint of natural resource conservation, rubber plants reduce soil erosion, enhance soil fertility, and add carbon to the soil. Secondary activities can also be derived from rubber trees, such as the production of honey and rubber seed oil. This chapter highlights the gaps and future strategies for the commercialization of this species in Nepal, where the eastern region of the country has suitable climatic and soil parameters for the commercialization of the rubber tree. Nepal imports approximately 13 billion rupees (USD $104 million) worth of rubber annually, signifying the high potential for the rubber production industry in the country. Current rubber farmers in Nepal face production challenges, including mechanization, skilled human resources, a reliable market, seedlings, input materials, agriculture credit, crop insurance, and improved production technology. We emphasize the need for examining the habitat suitability of H. brasiliensis, optimum cultivation practices, a reliable estimate of input costs, and productivity to ensure that these parameters are considered while formulating a robust policy for rubber commercialization. Additionally, a strong outreach and educational program is needed to increase awareness in small-scale farmer communities for the successful commercialization of the rubber enterprise in Nepal.
