Algebraic operations such as sums involve only a finite number of terms by definition. The term series refers to the limiting case where the number of summands is taken to infinity. The goal of this chapter is to develop some of the basic theory of numerical series. We start with a brief introduction to the field of complex numbers, since that is the natural context for many of the fundamental results.
