Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a technique where inflammatory cells are washed out from the lung. These cells can be used as an aid in the diagnosis of various interstitial lung diseases, but also in infections, and inhalation of foreign material. BAL should always be combined with tissue analysis, which gives the best answer to the etiology of the disease under investigation.
