Sustainable development goals (SDGs) 2015 which were set to envision a new world in 2030 has put emphasis on sustainability of environment, economic growth and promotion of good health for all among many others. Food loss and wastage that occurs in every stage of the food supply chain starting from food production to consumption stage, is nearly one third of total food production globally. Food wastage doesn’t only impose economical and energy loss but also creates a huge burden on the environment. As per report (UN Environment programme 2021) the emission of GreenHouse Gases (GHG) from food wastage was 9.3 billion tonnes CO2e which was about one third of total annual anthropogenic GHG emission in 2017. Again, plastic which is hard to decompose, and the recycling is insufficient to its imprudent usage worldwide, leads to mammoth plastic wastage and a threat to environmental pollution. So, production of value-added products like bio-plastics from food waste can be an excellent alternative to synthetic plastics. Bioplastics are being produced by bio-polymers obtained from agro-food waste (plant or animal sources). Though the sustainability and expensive manufacturing process make such bioplastic a challenge for its large-scale commercial usage but if these hurdles are removed, then it would help to conserve the environment, resources and will promote economic growth and good health.
