This chapter discusses the necessity of establishing legal and ethical frameworks to guide AI development, drawing parallels with the successful regulation of biotechnologies. Lessons from biotechnologies illustrate the potential for balanced regulation that fosters innovation without compromising safety, highlighting the need for transparency, inclusivity, and regular updates to regulatory frameworks. It emphasizes the importance of international cooperation in setting shared ethical standards to ensure AI benefits humanity while mitigating risks. The European regulation for data protection (GDPR) as well as the recently implemented European AI Act represent the first regulatory frameworks to foster the responsible use of AI to the benefit of mankind.
