In phlebology, many eponyms are in use for perforating veins. Perforating veins or perforators in the lower limb are numerous and quite variable. For the upper limb, only one perforating vein has received clinical relevance for applying an arteriovenous fistula for maintenance of hemodialysis, and is known with the eponymcubital vein of Gracz. In clinical practice, many perforators of the lower limb have been associated with authorities in the field including Bassi, Boyd, Cockett, Dodd, Hach, Hunter, Kuster, May and Sherman, sometimes misleading. Therefore, descriptive terms are preferred. When perforating veins pass through the muscular fascia, they are mostly accompanied by a small artery and a cutaneous nerve, together known with the eponymtriad of Staubesand. Here, we concentrate on the perforating veins of the lower limb. For further data on the authors quoted, reference is made to Part II (The Anatomical Eponyms from A to Z) and figures in this part.
